In Dungeons & Dragons, I think we need to change the term ‘random encounters’ to ‘random events’ – it allows for a wider set of tables and I think would get more newer players to start using them more often.
One of the biggest issues I see for new players adopting random encounter tables is that they just think it fighting monsters all the time – for no real reason.
Calling it ‘random events’ insinuates that it won’t be just random monsters, but various events, including monsters.
Which brings me to my next point – we should be putting in more than just monsters and combat into those random tables.
